1997 The Crypts of Lieberkühn
Site-Specific London by Michael Booth, Dance Europe October/November '97
... The oddest dance I stumbled across was in conceptual artists Marko
Licky Waschke self-billed stomach symphony performance The Crypts of
Lieberkühn. The title is taken from a Berlin anatomist who discovered
crypts covering the surface of the small intestine. The location was
a tiny Soho cafe-bar called tac-tical. Not all experiments pan out. Waschkes
prime motive was to increase body awareness through digestive sound.
Due to faulty Technology, the squelchy gurgles expected to be broadcast
live from the guts of his two movers (Gary Hughes and the strikingly
watchable Walli Höfinger) failed to materialize. The evening wasn't
a waste, however thanks to the ceremonial serving of eatable art and
John Edwards crazily commited bassplaying. His scraping, crying, rumbling
instrument really jammed with the Dancers, particularly with Höfinger.
Her superb controlled tremulousness was a minaturists pleasure.
